![]() In this summary you will learn What the five vital elements of well-being are How to improve your life in all these essential areas Recommendation Gallup Inc., the world’s most experienced polling organization, set out to determine what makes people happy. In this book, Tom Rath and Jim Harter, two Gallup professionals, dissect the organization’s complex research findings. Real well-being depends on a blend of satisfaction in five distinct areas: work, money, health, social life and community. For entirely practical reasons, not everyone can follow Rath and Harter’s advice, no matter how sound it may be. For those who can adhere to its precepts, this is a solid, revealing and useful text on happiness. getAbstract recommends the authors’ all-inclusive philosophy of well-being and notes that this book comes with another bonus: special access codes to Gallup’s online “Well-being Finder,” which readers can use to measure their leadership strengths and track their well-being quotient. About the authors Tom Rath directs workplace research and leadership consulting activities for Gallup, Inc., where Jim Harter, PhD, is chief scientist for international workplace management and well-being.

![]() In this summary you will learn Why innovation is so beneficial What five drivers impel innovation How to make the most of innovation’s guiding principle: “Look at More Stuff; Think About It Harder.” Recommendation This fascinating book on innovation meets the primary criterion of any guide on the subject: Be innovative. You would expect no less from Andy Stefanovich, the “chief curator and provocateur” at Prophet, a strategic branding, marketing, innovation, and design consultancy. His message: To develop a truly innovative concept, go sit in a park, or confer with your building’s custodian, or ask your team for the worst possible idea for a project. Over the past 20 years, Stefanovich has established a reputation as an extremely disruptive consultant – in a good way. He guides his clients to shun traditional thinking, pat answers and clichéd responses. He insists that they think not just outside the box, but far away from wherever they left the box. Coca-Cola, Procter & Gamble, Nike, GE and other corporate giants follow his idiosyncratic, creative recommendations. If you want to learn to cook, find a chef, says getAbstract, which recommends the idea that if you want to learn to innovate, perhaps you should find a provocateur. About the author Andy Stefanovich, the “chief curator and provocateur” at Prophet, a branding, marketing, innovation, and design firm, is a visiting professor at Duke, Dartmouth, and other prestigious universities.

![]() In this summary you will learn What “commitment contracts” are How you can use a commitment contract to reach your goals Recommendation Have you been making the same resolutions over and over – about losing weight or stopping smoking – without success? If so, a “commitment contract” can help. In his entertaining new book, lawyer, economist and author Ian Ayres shows how pledging yourself to a reward (a “carrot”) or a punishment (a “stick”) can be a forceful motivator. Ayres describes commitment contracts in a conversational, anecdotal style. getAstract recommends this book to anyone interested in human behavior. It can help you reach that elusive personal or professional goal – if you’re ready to put your money where your mouth is. About the author Lawyer, economist and author Ian Ayres wrote Super Crunchers: Why Thinking-By-Numbers is the New Way to Be Smart. He is the William K. Townsend Professor of Law at Yale University.

![]() In this summary you will learn How to manage your boss How to manage those who report to you How to negotiate the ins and outs of office politics How to deal with bad bosses How to recognize when you’re about to be fired Recommendation Career expert and author Roberta Chinsky Matuson knows that to succeed you must get along with your boss and with those who report to you. Her book features a unique format: Start at the front of the book with the “Managing Up” cover, read the text that follows and learn how to manage your boss. Flip the book over, open the “Managing Down” cover and learn how to manage your team. Thus, the author provides two separate books with two separate covers within the same binding. Despite a few sloppy details here and there, getAbstract believes that Matuson’s book will help you become a better manager and advance your career. About the author Career expert Roberta Chinsky Matuson heads Human Resources Solutions.

![]() Quá cần thiết cho những ai đang hiện đang đi làm và phải đối mặt với những "thứ bẩn thỉu" xung quanh. ![]() In this summary you will learn How people in the workplace manipulate, bully and take advantage of others What to do if you are on the receiving end of a dirty trick How to confront an office trickster and maintain your integrity Recommendation Thinking that the only thing you have to do at the office is good work is naïve. Every company has people who will stop at nothing to further their own agendas. Hiding your head in the sand (or behind your computer screen) only makes you an easy target. Instead, learn about the common dirty tricks played in offices and protect yourself from becoming a victim. To outmaneuver the manipulators, getAbstract recommends reading this clever, short introductory course on office politics. Organizational experts Mike Phipps and Colin Gautrey have done the research for you, identifying the most common and insidious dirty tricks, and outlining strategies for putting up your defenses or, when appropriate, confronting the attackers. Oftentimes, simply exposing the trick reduces its potency and sends the perpetrator scurrying back into the shadows. About the authors Mike Phipps and Colin Gautrey co-founded a company that helps individuals and organizations develop necessary political skills. Phipps has consulted with some of the world’s largest corporations. Gautrey is a business professional, trainer and coach.

![]() In this summary you will learn Why getting started is as important as having good ideas Why competitive companies need their people to innovate and act What prevents individuals from turning great ideas into marketable products Recommendation Hockey superstar Wayne Gretzky neatly summed up the subject of this Seth Godin book when he said, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” On every page, in different ways, Godin admonishes, cajoles and persuades you to take your shot. He pushes you to “Get Started!” because, he contends, innovation followed by action is the only way to succeed in today’s globally competitive world where quality and good service are standards. Godin is a dynamic speaker and blogger, and his book reads like a speech or a blog post with short sentences, inspirational one-liners and nutshell examples that hammer home his main point. Although it lacks the substance of his previous works while covering much of the same ground, getAbstract suggests this book to those who need a swift shove off the couch and to all Godin followers who will relish his evangelical style, passion and forcefulness. About the author Blogger and columnist Seth Godin has written 12 business bestsellers including Permission Marketing and Meatball Sundae. He is CEO of the Squidoo publishing platform.

![]() In this summary you will learn Why most people do not achieve their goals What the “HARD Goals” approach entails Why goals should be “heartfelt, animated, required and difficult," How you can you use this method to attain your objectives Recommendation Are the goals you are struggling to achieve just too difficult? Probably not. Most likely, they’re too easy. Most people set mediocre, unimportant goals and don’t even pay attention to them, take them seriously or remember them. Leadership consultant Mark Murphy suggests a much different approach: Make your goals as difficult as possible, and set objectives that are absolutely essential to your continued well-being. Such ambitious goals actively engage you and focus your mind. getAbstract recommends Murphy’s well-researched, scientifically documented explanation of his strategy. He includes numerous real-life examples of how “HARD Goals” force people to focus their efforts. As James Boswell, the famous biographer, once said, “Depend upon it, sir, when a man knows he is to be hanged in a fortnight, it concentrates his mind wonderfully.” Murphy’s solution to the problem of focusing on your goals appears at the end of his four main chapters: “Get more examples and tools at hardgoals.com.” About the author Mark Murphy is founder and CEO of Leadership IQ, a leadership-training firm. He also wrote Hundred Percenters.

In this summary you will learn What common problems confront managers How to use eight crucial management lessons to solve them Recommendation David Cottrell, president and CEO of the Cornerstone Leadership Institute, is the author of this exemplary, easy-to-read book on the secrets of management. He has packaged what might otherwise have been a series of dry, boring management precepts – preserve your time, listen to your people, accept responsibility, focus on what truly counts – into an enjoyable, educational fictitious story. Jeff Walters, a business manager at midlife who can’t seem to do anything right, has eight Monday morning mentoring sessions with accomplished businessman Tony Pearce. During these meetings, Tony, who is wise and savvy, gives Jeff (and the fortunate readers of this book) a crash course on how to become an excellent manager and leader. This engaging book is filled with valuable insights. getAbstract recommends it to all junior managers who want to develop their craft and their leadership expertise. About the author David Cottrell is president and CEO of the CornerStone Leadership Institute. A former senior manager at FedEx and Xerox, he is the author of 11 books and a frequent speaker on leadership.

![]() In this summary you will learn Why it’s sometimes preferable to look for compromises before saying “no” Why you don’t need an excuse to say “no” Why you have the option of saying “no” to time-wasters, naysayers and bullies Recommendation Authors Alan Axelrod and Jim Holtje have compiled 201 ways to say "no" in different situations and to different types of people - colleagues and co-workers, salespeople, clients and customers, your boss, your subordinates, and job seekers. You can say "no" to extra work, nuisance tasks, unreasonable demands, bad ideas, and misguided sales pitches. The book offers some good ideas, although its approach is scatter-shot and somewhat superficial. Most of the ideas are based on common sense approaches to turning people down, such as suggesting alternatives, providing explanations, being diplomatic, and being firm if that’s appropriate. You may have to be patient to ferret out the ideas that apply to your needs, but they’re in here somewhere. getAbstract recommends this book to junior employees, who are most likely to want to say "no," and to those who feel imposed upon because they can’t say no. About the authors Alan Axelrod has produced a wide range of popular business and communication books. Jim Holtje is the Director of International Client services for a Washington, D.C. corporate communications and public relations management-consulting firm.
